Ireland and the Irish are responsible for the philosophy of Martial Arts known as Gan Teora. Our philosophy is Gaelic in origin. It is pronounced “Gone Chor-A”. It translates into “Unlimited” or “Without Restrictions”, and represents us well. It was developed by Irishmen in Ireland combining the best of several forms of martial arts and the spirit that has made Ireland a haven for artists and warriors throughout history.

The period of time referred to as the Dark Ages reflects a time in European history that represents rebellion, turmoil and the decline in art, history and culture. It is a time in which most of Europe fell into “darkness”, but Ireland remained unaffected.

Ireland became a refuge in which artists, poets, astrologers, scientists, warriors and holy men could find sanctuary, where their talents and skills could flourish and their philosophies and thoughts could take root and grow.

These talented craftsmen decorated their art works and shields with intricate and delicate “celtic knot work” signifying the reverence they possessed for the unrestricted freedom which they enjoyed so that they were able to pursue their beliefs and training.

Our symbol, the Tri Knot, comes out of this period. It has no beginning—no end, it is continuous, as your training should be. As you progress you will find many high points, and some low points, just like the path on the knot.

Never sit back on your accomplishments, allowing your training and your life to stand still. Remember that your training is a never-ending journey spanning the course of your life.

Through your journey you will develop self-confidence, self-discipline, and self esteem. You will benefit from the unlimited aspect of your training here, where the only restriction is your doubts and fears.
